We will make good on our promise to do more

— although we’re not exactly sure what of yet (🤞 writing) —

We will travel

— although, that could be only just down the road to gather another perspective —

We will embrace the sunshine and dance in the night

— and we will take the good with the bad because 365 days is a long time.

It’s taken a couple of days but I finally have that New Year feeling! Everything feels fresh, new, and brimming with potential. Even as I dust the cobwebs from this blog, and shine things up, I feel refreshed and full of hope.

I love New Years even though I don’t love resolutions — 365 days is too much time to plan out piece by piece without wandering away from the path somewhere along the road. Still! It’s good to know generally which direction you want to head in for the future.

Last year — I said it to myself but nobody else — my focus was gratitude.

Gratitude

Gratitude for what I have and just generally being positive about the future — I live in the freaking tropics, I should be thankful! 🏝

During a particularly clear winter night, my roommate made me write that word down on a piece of paper and burn it on the beach. She said the breeze would take it away and make it real. And, I did this, mostly, because it sounded like it couldn’t hurt to try.

Only afterwards did she mention that she thought words could backfire sometimes — and that your own intentions could form into negative mantras. She said she reckoned that sometimes you shouldn’t tempt the universe by choosing something so grandiose as ‘gratitude’ or ‘strength’ for it might, instead, give you a million reasons you’ll need to summon that gratitude; give you a million bad events that you’ll need to be stronger for. All this, even before I thought to tell her my word.

Sat, riding next to her, in her red Toyota Rav 4, this was about the moment I decided to keep my word to myself. I didn’t really want her knowing I’d already managing to mess up my year. 😅😂😂

Logic be damned, though, because my 2018 was spectacular. 🤩

Sure, there were dicey moments — like falling and almost breaking my back moments — but there were other, far more spectacular moments, that made my year memorable, magical, and magnificent.

Anyway, all this to say: I think 2019 is going to be a good year.

I’m excited to see what 365 days bring me this time around, where my feet take me, and what’s in store for my writing too.

Do you have New Year’s resolutions?
